Driven Media YouTube Channel made airless tires from scratch using small plastic rollers purchased from a hardware shop and then put them to the test on a vehicle.
The next big thing in tires is puncture-proof airless tires, and major tire manufacturers have been working on them for years, developing, testing, and constructing them. We haven’t yet seen them put to use on a regular basis, but on-the-job testing has begun.
The YouTube channel Driven Media didn’t want to wait for the official release of the tires, so they made their own DIY version of them. Let’s find out how things went out with them…
Airless Tires DIY Procedure
Considering how difficult it is to manufacture a new tire, it is evident that it will not be an easy task to do. What you will see in the video is a combination of steel wheels from a Ford, plastic freshwater pipes, a standard tire tread and hundreds of nuts and bolts to keep it all together.
Airless tires are created by inserting pieces of plastic pipe between an old wheel and an outside tire tread. They say that these tires have anti-vibration capabilities thanks to a clever positioning of smaller pipes next to larger ones.
At first, they decided to test their tires on an artificial racetrack rather than in real-world conditions since it would be easier and less time-consuming. Except for a few nuts and bolts that keep breaking apart, the tire holds up well during the testing since it uses commercially available outer tread and inner wheel.
The way a bed of nails is prepared is essential for an airless tire, and they did just that. As a result of this test, the tires were relatively intact, and they went on to perform a variety of other tests, including driving on grass and rugged rural roads as well as large potholes.
Even though they may break down with time, this is the best you can get at a small price, and while constructed in your garage, the tires looked very impressive during the testing.
To get your hands on Michelin’s airless tires, you’ll have to wait a little longer since they’ll be available on Chevys’ next electric vehicles.
